In order for the roofing to fulfill its function for many years and not to cause unnecessary problems to the user during transport and storage, several basic rules should be followed. This will prevent damage to the structure of the material and prevent its deformation. It is also worth emphasizing that the correct transport of metal sheet and its proper storage before assembly is a pre-condition for positive consideration of the guarantee. That is why we have created a guide that will easily explain how to properly perform these activities.

Correct unloading of trapezoidal sheet

Let’s start with unloading. For this purpose we recommend using belt slings or forklifts with a fork spacing of at least 150 cm. It should be remembered that during unloading, the materials must be protected against scratches and dents. In case you do not have the above-mentioned devices, the only option is manual unloading. 4 people will be needed for that. There should be at least 1 person per 1 meter of the sheet. Sheets should be carried vertically. This will prevent deformation of the material.

How long can sheet be stored after unloading?

Now that we have already discussed the issue of unloading, it is time to explain the correct method of storing sheet metal. The factory packaging is used only to protect sheets during transport and short-term storage. Galvanized sheets and aluzinc in factory packagings may be stored for a maximum of 2 days from the date of delivery. In turn, coated sheets can be stored in factory packagings for 3 weeks. Before this date, all sheets must be removed from their packagings and dried. Galvanized sheets and aluzinc must be protected additionally with a layer of preservative oil.

How to properly store sheet in the long run?

It is often necessary to store sheets for a long time. In such cases all sheets must be placed at an angle of at least 3 degrees in a closed room on dry wooden pads at least 20 cm from the ground. Each sheet must be interleaved with dry wooden slats ensuring free air circulation. Thus protected sheets may be stored for a maximum of 6 months from the manufacturing date. Sheets in bundles and coils must not be stored outdoors or in rooms exposed to moisture and changing temperatures.

Under what conditions should sheet be stored?

The conditions in which sheet is stored have a great impact on its durability. Metal sheet must not be stored near fertilizers, acids and other aggressive substances.

Correct storage of sheets covered with foil

When storing sheets covered with foil, care should be taken to protect the material from moisture. In case of moisture, the protective foil must be removed immediately. Foiled sheets can be stored for a maximum of 3 months in a dry, closed room that protects them against the impact of light radiation. The user must remove the protective foil before installing sheets.

Summary

Transport and storage of metal sheets should be carried out in accordance with the rules described by us. It should be remembered that storage of steel sheets for a long time should take place in closed rooms, isolated from the impact of external factors. In particular, moisture and sun rays have a destructive effect on metal sheets. Failure to meet these requirements will result in shorter material life and loss of guarantee protection. It is worth remembering that in this article we have presented general guidelines for storing sheet metal. The maximum storage time for individual sheet metal models may vary. Always refer to the manufacturer’s guidelines for a given grade of sheet metal.
